BIOPROCESSING

Innovative Bioeconomy: Fermentation, Bioproducts, and Biomass Utilization

INNOV Bioprocesses Center

INNOV’s Bioprocesses Center is a major player in the Atlantic bioeconomy, specializing in fermentation, the recovery of organic waste, and the production of high-value-added bioproducts.

Its activities span a unique continuum ranging from applied research in fermentation to the conversion of residues into energy or functional ingredients.

With state-of-the-art laboratories in Grand Falls and a pilot biomethanation facility in Saint John, INNOV helps companies design environmentally responsible processes, recover value from their waste streams, and innovate in the processing of organic materials.

Our

Services

INNOV–Bioprocédés combines biological sciences, engineering, and digital intelligence to make sustainability a driver of competitiveness.

Develop and Formulate

We support companies from the design phase through fermentation testing and product formulation.

  • Development and optimization of fermentation and distillation processes.
  • Feasibility studies and pilot tests for new ingredients or beverages.
  • Formulation of functional beverages and nutraceuticals.
  • Development and optimization of high-precision fermentation processes.

Analyze and Validate

Rigorous testing and quality control at every stage of production.

  • Microbiological, chemical, and sensory analyses (quality control, stability).
  • Implementation of quality control and quality assurance programs.
  • Specialized laboratory analyses for grains, malt, and hops.

Valorize and Sustain

Turning waste streams into new sources of value and energy.

  • Utilization of agricultural, agri-food, and marine byproducts.
  • Development of functional ingredients from byproducts.
  • Evaluation of biogas production and quality (CH₄, CO₂, H₂S) on a pilot scale.
  • Optimization of anaerobic digestion and co-digestion of mixed substrates.

Transfer and Scaling

Support industry adoption and long-term capacity building.

  • Training and skills transfer in the areas of fermentation, resource recovery, and sustainable development.
  • Technology transfer from the laboratory to the pilot scale.

Notable

Achievements

As experts in fermentation and biomass valorization, we transform organic waste into high-value resources. From the creation of innovative products to the production of bioenergy, we are driving the transition toward a circular and sustainable economy for our regional partners.

Some of our key achievements:

  • Over 150 fermented products developed: beers, spirits, and functional beverages.
  • Utilization of whey, apple pomace, and distillers’ grains as ingredients or energy sources.
  • Biogas and co-digestion performance studies for agri-food and municipal partners.
  • Technical support for Blue Roof Distillers, Moonshine Creek, Verger Belliveau Orchard, RPC, and Craft Alcohol NB.
  • Coorganisation du Down East Brew Conference, vitrine régionale d’innovation brassicole.
